Redbacks outplay Bulls in Wedderburn

WEDDERBURN outplayed the Birchip-Watchem Bulls in Saturday’s 10th round in Goldacres North Central senior footy.

The Redbacks were on their turf at Wedderburn’s Donaldson Park to take on last season’s runner-up.

A brilliant opening quarter set up what would be a 44-point victory for the Tom Metherell-coached Wedderburn.

As the Redbacks scored 7.4 in the first quarter they kept Birchip-Watchem to a tally of 2.1

The Bulls fought back to win the second term, 22-21.

Wedderburn won the next two quarters, 20-18 and 19-9.

By the final siren the Redbacks led 106-62.

The Bunters Cup is on Donald’s hands after the Royal Blues scored a 76-point win against Charlton at Charlton Park.

Donald led 14-6 at quarter-time and then scored 5.3 as it kept the Navies to a tally of 2.1 in the second.

After the Royals won the third, 28-12, they added 5.2 and kept the hosts scoreless in the final quarter.

Calder United scored a 69-44 victory at Boort Park.

The Lions were under pressure early as Boort led 15-7 at quarter-time.

A tally of 5.3 as it kept the Magpies to a goal in the second meant the Lions had gained a 19-point buffer by half-time.

Quarter three went Boort’s way, 16-13, but it was Calder United which steadied in the last to score 2.4 as the Magpies kicked 1.1.

Lists of goalkickers for both teams were not supplied.

St Arnaud could not halt the Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers charging to a 70-point victory on the Saints’ ground at Lord Nelson Park.

The Saints led 19-16 at quarter-time, but nine goals in the second put the Tigers well in control.

Sea Lake Nandaly led 75-28 at half-time and then won the third, 22-16.

The Tigers again showed they have plenty of attacking options as Max Cahoon, co-coach Brandon Bailey and Billy McInnes all kicked three goals in the 116-46 win.

Bryce Delmenico and Lachy McClelland added two each.

St Arnaud’s leading goalkicker was former coach Torin Petrie on two.
