Sandhurst marks great victory against Castlemaine

SANDHURST took the premiership points against Castlemaine in Friday night’s start to round 10 in the Champions IGA-backed CVFL senior women’s footy action.

The Dragons and Magpies played under the lights at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Previous two showdowns between these teams ended in wins for Castlemaine by 42 points at the QEO, and by 27 in the Magpies’ nest at Camp Reserve.

Sandhurst made a confident start to Friday’s clash as it led 14-8 at quarter-time.

The Dragons added two goals in the second and kept the Magpies to a tally of two points.

Premier the previous four seasons, Castlemaine hit back in the third as it added 2.3 and kept the maroon and blue to a goal.

In the last it was the Andrew Saladino and Liam Ireland-coached Sandhurst which handled the pressure to win the quarter, 7-3, and the match, 39-28.

Goalkicking accuracy was a key factor as Sandhurst scored 6.3 and the Magpies racked up 3.10.

The Dragons’ attack was led by Isabella Ayre on three goals as Ruby Campbell, Lily Franklin and Samantha Johnston were also on target.

Castlemaine’s goals were off the boot of Hannah Cochrane, Jemma Finning and Georgia Gordon.

Best for Sandhurst were Isabella Ayre, Ruby Campbell, Chloe Taylor, Alannah Prowse, Samantha Johnston and Eilish Grieve.

Taylah Sartori, Jemma Finning, Eillish Cumming, Grace Brady, Alice D’Arcy and Georgia Gribble were best for the Jordan Cochrane-coached Castlemaine.

Eaglehawk overcame a slow start to beat Wedge-Tailed Eagles at C and M Oval in Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Park.

The Eagles were up 15-1 at quarter-time and 21-8 by the long break.

Led by the play of coach Molly Metcalf, Grace Edlin and Lilly Stevenson, Eaglehawk fought back to win the third term, 6-1.

The Two Blues finished with plenty of run as they scored 3.2 and kept WTE to a behind in the last quarter.

At the final siren Eaglehawk led 34-23.

Hannah Kenny and Lilly Stevenson led the Borough’s attack on two goals each as Caitlin Evans was also on target.

Goalkickers for the Phil Hawkes-coached Eagles were Emma Williams, two, and Maddison Mansfield.

The Hawks’ best included Caitlin Evans, Eliza Long and Monique Gavriliadis.

Best for Wedge-Tailed Eagles were Teagan Ainslie, Amber Gajic, Demi Henderson, Mairead Murphy, Skye Sinclair and Jorja Bennett.

White Hills dominated its home game against Bendigo Thunder in Scott Street.

The Demons slammed on eight goals in the opening term and seven in the second.

Intensity at the contest by White Hills did not ease up as the red and black added eight goals in the third term and another four in the last.

A Demons’ team coached by Sharni Barker and Allara Jacksonled 173-nil at the final siren.

A list of 14 goalkickers for White Hills was led by Seisia White on five as Courtney Collard kicked four.

Other multiple goalkickers were Tracey Anderson and Allara Jackson with three each and Chelsea Edwards on two.

Best for White Hills were Ella Henery, Tracey Anderson, Kadeisha Smith, Jessica Kipping, Catherine Fry and Holly Smith.

Sharlene Cole, Lili Fan, Ngaire Harlan, Jasmine Alcon, Archie McLachlan and Morgan O’Neil were best for the Mick McInnes-coached Thunder.

Marong forfeited its match with the ladder-leading Golden Square which was to have been played on the Bulldogs’ turf at Country Vet Oval in Wade Street.

It took until the seventh round, but Golden Square celebrated its first win of this season’s Champions IGA-backed CVFL under-18 girls footy action.

The blue and gold marked a 38-23 victory in Sunday’s match against Marong at Gourmet Pantry Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.

A list of Golden Square’s goalkickers was not supplied.

Molly Austin slotted all three of Marong’s goals.

Golden Square’s best were Lily Mansfield, Jayde Chappel, Lucy Johansen, Makayla Roberts, Lucy Gilbee and Poppy Eaton.

Best for Marong were Emma O’Toole, Taylah Dudderidge, Alyssa Wardell, Molly Austin, Frankie Stevens and Emma Kilby.

Round seven kicked off with Friday night’s match between Sandhurst and Castlemaine under the lights at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

A closely-fought first half ended with Sandhurst in front, 32-28.

The Dragons’ scored 3.1 and kept the Magpies to a tally of 1.2 in the third quarter.

Neither team scored in the last term as Sandhurst claimed a 51-36 victory.

Mia Maxted capped a great match with four goals for the maroon and blue.

Castlemaine’s attack was led by Tegan Barry on two goals.

Sandhurst’s best were Zara Grieve, Tahlee Gray, Tully Place, Macey Pinner, Leni Brown and Mia Maxted.

A list of Castlemaine’s best was not supplied.

There were three other games played on Sunday.

Storm fought on for a 43-34 victory on Eaglehawk’s turf at C and M Oval in Canterbury Park.

The Storm line-up led 42-21 at three quarter-time.

Eaglehawk fought back brilliantly to win the last, 13-1, but it was Storm which took the premiership points.

Storm’s attack was led by Alysha Boyd on three goals.

Best for Storm were Alysha Boyd, Chella Fitzgerald, Jordan O’Bree, Marlie Skinner, Dempsey McDonnell and Scarlett Ward.

Eaglehawk’s best were Tahlia Thorpe, Charlise McQueen, Maggie Pollock, Rima Shanley, Maleah Lawry and Bethany Pollock.

The ladder-leading Woorinen charged to a 66-15 win at home against Echuca United.

Prue O’Sullivan kicked three goals for the Tigers as Stella Bibby and Ruby Butler booted two each.

Lists of best players from both teams were not supplied.

At White Hills the Demons fired up in a 72-17 win against Kangaroo Flat.

The Demons led 25-3 at quarter-time and 32-15 by the main break.

Term three was to be the best by White Hills as it scored 4.6 and kept the Kangaroos scoreless.

By the final siren the Demons led by 55 points.

Maddison Collard led the White Hills attack on three goals as Adele McNaughton added two majors.

Best for White Hills were Bella Mapperson, Ella Treacy, Maddison Collard, Jayda Alford and Elly Pickering.

Kangaroo Flat’s best were Ava Ahearn, Eheh Soe, Miller Lindrea, London Benaim, Felicia Buovac and Melanie White.
